Groups back same-day registration

A couple of groups are calling on lawmakers to keep the state's same-day voter registration system in place.

The League of Women Voters and Citizen Action of Wisconsin held a news conference this morning, at the Appleton Public Library.

Irene Strohbeen is with the league's local chapter. She says they should be doing more to promote voting, instead of taking actions that could discourage people.

Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna also supports same-day registration. He says without it, the state would have to follow federal rules, and that would put an extra burden on municipal clerks. He says the costs would fall on the backs of local government.

The Government Accountability Board estimates that it would cost $5 million to implement the changes, and $1 million a year, after that.
