GOP unveils latest mining bill
The debate over mining is officially starting again at the Capitol.
Republican lawmakers introduced a new bill this morning to streamline the permitting process.
Rep. Mary Williams of Medford says the proposal would not turn the DNR into a "rubber stamp." She says the agency, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA would have to approve a mine.
The bill would give the DNR 480 days to review a permit, and it wouldn't let people challenge a permit, until the agency already makes a decision. Mining companies would also have to restore wetlands that they damage, but they could do that elsewhere.
