More stores selling tobacco to minors
The head of a local anti-smoking group says those cuts from the state are having an impact on the number of stores that are selling tobacco to minors.
Community Action for Healthy Living executive director Wendy Vander Zanden says the failure rate during compliance checks went up in Outagamie, Winnebago, and Calumet counties last year. It fell slightly in Brown County. She says the funding cuts are to blame for the increases, because they don't have the money to do more frequent checks.
Vander Zanden says her group used to do about 360 compliance checks a year in Outagamie County, and now that number is below 90. She says without regular checks, stores have a greater tendency to break the rules.
