City narrowly approves stormwater project
Some people in a southeast Appleton neighborhood
have had to deal with major flooding problems, three times in the last 12 years, and now, city officials are hoping to give them some relief.
City council members approved a major stormwater project at East high school last night, on a 9-7 vote. They'll spend $8 million to build two storage tanks, under a parking lot.
Ald. Ed Baranowski says the school district was planning to re-do the lot anyway, so they're working together. He says they'll start digging once the school year is over, and they should finish the project in August. The city will pay for the new parking lot.
The project won't alleviate all of the flooding issues, and city leaders will consider other options in the future. One of them is a "dry pond" at Lions Park.
Ald. Chris Croatt is the chair of the parks and rec committee, and he says they should take a closer look at the impact of that, first.
The Lions Park project is not in the city's current five-year plan.
