Cullen working on own mining bill

Republican leaders in the Legislature unveiled their proposal to streamline the state's mine permitting process yesterday, but another bill is also in the works.

Democratic Sen. Tim Cullen of Janesville says his proposal is based on the bipartisan hearings he held late last year. He says his bill does a better job of preventing water pollution in the Bad River and Lake Superior.

Cullen says the Republican mining bill unveiled on Wednesday will allow mine waste to be dumped into waterways.

GOP Senator Dale Schultz of Richland Center says he plans to co-sponsor Cullen's version. He says he's also willing to seriously consider the bill that was introduced by Republican leaders.
