G.B. shelter still looking for help

A homeless shelter in downtown Green Bay lost its temporary overflow option, and staffers are still looking for another community organization to help.

St. John the Evangelist Church can legally keep 64 people at its facility, and St. Norbert College was taking in extra people, while students were on winter break. That arrangement ended yesterday, when classes resumed.

Shelter director Alexia Wood says another church is willing to take in some women, occasionally, but that still doesn't bring the shelter into compliance with its capacity limit.

The shelter could face a $500 fine for each night that it's over-capacity, but Wood says the city is putting that on hold, while they look for other options.

A hearing on increasing the shelter's capacity to 84 people is scheduled for next month.
