Lawmakers hear both sides of mining debate

People on both sides of the mining debate showed up at a hearing in Madison yesterday, to weigh in on a proposal to streamline the permitting process.

Supporters hope it will attract a company that wants to open an iron ore mine in Iron and Ashland counties.

A woman from Hurley told lawmakers that jobs are so hard to come by in northern Wisconsin, that her husband had to go to a North Dakota oil field to find work.

During the hearing, a state official said the bill would relax some environmental regulations for mines.  Some opponents say the environmental damage caused by mines isn't worth the added jobs.

Chuck Matyska of Cecil is the president of Wisconsin Wildlife Federation.  He says the group is waiting to see scientific studies about a possible mine, before taking a side in the fight.

The Assembly and Senate mining committees hosted the hearing.

Democratic lawmakers that represent Iron and Ashland counties are asking Republican leaders to hold another hearing in northern Wisconsin.
