Appleton to install new water meters

City of Appleton crews will have a big job on their hands in the coming years.

Deputy public works director Nate Loper says they're going to replace the water meters in nearly 28,000 homes and businesses over the next four years.

The city installed the existing meters between 1999 and 2005, and Loper says technology has advanced to the point that they can't get replacement parts from their manufacturers, or any software support.

He says the new ones will have a 20-year warranty, and the city will be able to read them from a computer on a daily basis. Loper says that will help detect water leaks in a home, more quickly. Right now, he says, they only check for them every three months.

Loper says that also means workers won't have to collect the readings every three months, by driving along every street in the city. He says that will save time and gas.
