Appleton to look at school retirement benefits
With health insurance costs rising, the Appleton school board could
consider changes to the retirement benefits that teachers and staff receive.
District chief financial officer Don Hietpas says a study showed the district's liability is $120 million, over the next 30 years, and the growth isn't sustainable.
Hietpas says it's his understanding that the board doesn't want to take away the benefits that people have already earned, or have a big impact on those who are close to retirement.
Right now, the district can contribute to health insurance premiums for retirees, until they're eligible for Medicare.
Hietpas says they could consider putting a cap on payments, once they reach a certain dollar amount. He says they might also raise the minimum retirement age from 55, and extend the time it takes to earn specific benefits.
The board's business services committee will talk about the possibilities next week.
