Election change could keep candidates away

A local professor says if lawmakers change the way the state awards its electoral college votes in presidential elections, Wisconsin would no longer be a battleground state.

Some Republican lawmakers want those votes to go to the winner of each congressional district, instead of the current winner-takes-all system.

Lawrence University political science professor Arnold Shober says if that happens, candidates would have little reason to come here.

Governor Walker distanced himself from the proposal yesterday, saying Wisconsin voters benefit from seeing the candidates up close.

Shober says many states led by Republican-controlled legislatures are considering the change, because if electoral college votes were awarded by congressional districts, Mitt Romney would have won last November's election.
