Doctor weighs in on cancer screenings

A local doctor says recommendations about cancer screenings from a consumer advocacy magazine make sense.

Consumer Reports has a list of cancer tests that most people should get, or avoid, in this month's issue.

ThedaCare's cancer program chair, Dr. Kevin Wasco says he agrees that screenings for colon, cervical, and breast cancer are accurate, and cost effective.

He also agrees with the magazine's claim that people should avoid eight other screenings – prostate, ovarian, testicular, bladder, lung, skin, oral, and pancreatic cancers.

He says many of those tests aren't very accurate, they involve large amounts of radiation, and they can subject a patient to unnecessary treatment. But Wasco says people in high-risk categories may still want to get those tests, and they should talk with their primary doctor.
