Founder of St. Joseph Food Program honored
The man who started the St. Joseph Food Program 30 years ago is retiring, and the state is calling him a Wisconsin Hero.
First Lady Tonnette Walker hands out the award to someone each month, for making a difference in the community, and today she recognized Tom Schiltz.
Schiltz says he was surprised, and honored by the award.
He says he started the St. Joseph Food Program after hearing about layoffs at an Appleton business. But four months after it opened, he found it increasingly difficult to get food and money for the pantry, and was packing up boxes to close it. He says that's when he saw a woman and child standing in the doorway, and he knew he needed help.
Schiltz says he found the help he needed from several people in the community, and the program became a success.
While Schiltz is officially retiring from the food program, he'll remain on its board of directors.
