Sturgeon spearers prepare for season
Sturgeon spearers are preparing for the opening of this year's season on Saturday, and many of them already have their spot staked out.
DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs says many of the 500 people with permits for the upriver lakes should have good luck, because the water quality is great.
He says that's not the case on Lake Winnebago, where they won't be able to see more than seven-to-10 feet below the ice. He says that's because high winds broke up the ice a couple of weeks ago...and stirred up sediment.
Koenigs says there are a lot of sturgeon in the system, and many of them are near-record size. He says most of the biggest sturgeon ever speared came out of the lake in the past several years.
