Helmrath has plea deal in Darboy stabbing

The suspect in a random stabbing at Darboy Community Park last year reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

18-year-old Devon Helmrath of Appleton was convicted yesterday afternoon of reckless endangerment. He'll be sentenced at a later date.

Court records say Helmrath stabbed a 73-year-old man in the back, last July. They say Helmrath lured the victim into a wooded area, by claiming that he lost his cell phone.

Helmrath initially pleaded insanity, but he changed it to not guilty late last year, after reviewing the results of a psychiatric evaluation. Records say Helmrath told a friend he'd enter an insanity plea, if he got caught.

He was originally charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
