Appleton police follow tracks to burglar

Appleton police say a burglar didn't do a very good job of covering his tracks, after breaking into a northside home early this morning.

Sgt. Dave Lund says a homeowner in the 1600 block of N. Morrison Street woke up shortly after two, while a burglar was trying to steal a TV. He says the suspect ran away when the homeowner confronted him, but not before stealing a cell phone.

Lund says investigators found shoe prints, with a distinctive pattern, in the snow, leading away from the house A K-9 unit tracked them to a home in the 1500 block of N. Oneida Street. Officers found a shoe that matched the prints in that house. Lund says investigators turned up more incriminating evidence.

Once in the house, an officer called the stolen cell phone, and it rang in the suspects coat pocket.

Police arrested 40-year-old Horace Fields, and they're asking prosecutors to charge him with burglary.
