Skyward to fight for contract, may leave state

A Wisconsin company that will fight the decision to award a state contract to a Minnesota firm could leave the state.

Skyward is a software company in Stevens Point, and CEO Clifford King says even if they do move, workers would have the option of staying in the state.

The firm learned late last week that the state will give a Minnesota software provider the exclusive contract, to provide student databases to school districts in Wisconsin. King contends that the bidding process didn't take the total cost into account, because districts would have to foot the bill to convert to a new system. He says it would cost $400,000 for the Stevens Point district to make that change.

King says Skyward currently sells its databases to most Wisconsin school districts, and he doesn't want to pack up and leave. But he says it doesn't make sense to make a capital investment in a state where a company can't sell its own product.

The state departments of public instruction, and administration, will review Skyward's appeal.
