Fiscal bureau projects Medicaid costs

A Green Bay Democrat says the federal government's plan to give states more money, to expand Medicaid coverage, is a win-win situation.

A report from the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau found that Wisconsin would save $66 million over the first three years, by increasing the income-eligibility limits for adults who don't have young children. Over the following four years, the state would be on the hook for about $133 million.

The overall commitment from the federal government would reach nearly $4.4 billion.

Sen. Dave Hansen says Governor Walker is expected to decide later this month whether to accept the federal funding.

Hansen says the expansion would provide health care coverage to about 175,000 more people.

Democrats asked the fiscal bureau to analyze the costs. Hansen says another independent study estimated the expansion would create 10,000 jobs in the health care industry.
