Washington Place demolition set
The Washington Place building in downtown Appleton now has a date with a wrecking ball.
The city council approved a demolition contract last night, and work will start in a couple of weeks.
City facilities and construction management director Dean Gazza says crews will start by removing asbestos, and any lead paint. He says it's possible there could be more of those hazardous materials than they currently believe, so they're setting aside another $50,000 for cost over-runs.
The winning bid for the project was just under $500,000, and that's much lower than the $1.2 million the city put in the capital budget for the work. Once it's done, Gazza says the site will be an open, grass lot.
Gazza says they need to finish the demolition by mid-July, so city crews can finish the reconstruction work on Washington Avenue.
