Walker skeptical about federal Medicaid funding
Governor Walker is questioning whether the federal government
will be able to hold up on its end of the bargain on a proposed Medicaid expansion.
A report from the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau shows the state would save $66 million over the first three years. That's because federal funding would cover the entire cost of offering health care coverage to more low- and moderate-income adults.
The state would be on the hook for $133 million over the following four years, but the federal government's bill would reach $4.4 billion for the first seven years.
Governor Walker says it wasn't long ago that some in Congress talked about making cuts to Medicaid. He says right now, the federal government isn't fulfilling its existing obligations to the state.
The governor expects to announce his decision in a couple of weeks, when he releases his proposed state budget.
