L.C. plans to keep sex offender rules
De Pere is getting rid of its sex offender residency rules, but a Heart of the Valley community won't likely follow that city's lead.
Several years ago, many northeast Wisconsin communities banned registered sex offenders from living near schools, parks, and other areas where children congregate.
De Pere officials repealed their rules, after the police chief called them arbitrary, and state officials warned that they drive some offenders underground.
Little Chute passed a similar law in 2007, and Fox Valley Metro Police Chief Eric Misselt says he hasn't heard of any problems.
Jim Moes is the secretary of Little Chute's sexual offender residency board. He says they've heard appeals from offenders who want to live in different parts of the village, and they've honored some of those requests.
