DNR predicts long sturgeon season
The sturgeon spearing season opens tomorrow, and thousands of spearers are cutting their hole in the ice today.
A DNR sturgeon expert says they could be in for a long season. Biologist Ryan Koenigs says water quality on Lake Winnebago is worse than the past few years...and he doesn't think spearers will hit the harvest caps on the big lake before the 16-day season ends. He says the up-river lakes could close soon after opening weekend, because the ice and clarity are bettern than on Winnebago.
Koenigs says more than 12,000 people have sturgeon permits this year, and it will be interesting to see if ice or water conditions on the big lake keep some of them from coming out.
Koenigs expects to see more spearers set up off the east shore of Lake Winnebago, because the ice is considerably better than on the west side of the lake.
