Group optimistic about jobs plan
Governor Walker will put $100 million toward job training programs in his next state budget, and a local business advocate hopes it helps alleviate some of the state's skills gap.
Larry Burkhardt is the executive director of the Appleton Regional Partnership. He says a lot of jobs are available in certain fields. He says some manufacturers are willing to hire skilled tradesmen like welders, even if they don't necessarily have an immediate need.
The governor's plan ties food stamp assistance to participation in job training programs, for people without dependant children. He also wants to give financial incentives to universities and technical colleges that focus on training workers in high-demand areas.
