Sturgeon spearing ending on upriver lakes
The sturgeon spearing season will come to an end later today, on the upriver lakes of the Lake Winnebago system.
DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says spearers registered 30 fish yesterday -- nine on Lake Winnebago, and 21 on the upriver lakes of Winneconne, Poygan, and Butte des Morts. Six from the upriver lakes were adult females, and that triggered the harvest cap for the smaller lakes.
Koenigs says poor water clarity continues to make spearing a challenge on Lake Winnebago, and it's causing some to quit early. He says the season on Lake Winnebago will likely last the full 16 days.
