Cowles wants to fast-track job proposals

A Republican lawmaker from Allouez wants to push part of Governor Walker's jobs agenda outside of the budget process.

Governor Walker announced last weekend that he'll include an upgrade to the state's jobs database in his spending plan. He also wants to offer financial incentives to technical colleges and universities that put a greater emphasis on training students in high-demand fields.

Sen. Rob Cowles announced yesterday that he wants to take up those issues in a stand-alone bill, to speed up the process. He says the current job skills database isn't working properly. Cowles says the new system would show what jobs are available, what skills they require, and where they are.

Cowles feels a stand-alone bill could pass the Legislature much sooner than the budget. The budget won't take effect until July, if lawmakers pass it by then.
