Expert urges early childhood reading
An expert on early childhood development is trying to spread the message about the importance of reading to children, at a very young age.
Dr. Dipesh Navsaria is the medical director of Reach Out and Read Wisconsin, and he says the earlier parents start, the better. He says if they start too late, their children won't have the basic skill sets that they need.
Navsaria says he's watched four-year-old children pick up a book, and not know what to do with it. He says that puts them behind their peers, and it's one of the reasons the state has an achievement gap.
Navsaria spoke at the Appleton Public Library yesterday, as part of the Appleton Education Foundation's community education program.
