Gov. Walker wants to expand DNA collection
Governor Walker unveiled a little more of his budget proposal today, when he announced that he's including an extra $6 million to expand DNA collection in the state.
Outagamie County Sheriff Brad Gehring says it's a good investment.
The governor's plan requires officers to collect a DNA sample at every felony arrest, some misdemeanor arrests, and after the conviction of any crime. Gehring says officers deal with many people who have a lengthy crime history, but much of it goes undetected without DNA evidence.
Gehring says DNA can also exonerate people who were wrongly convicted, and exclude suspects during investigations.
Under the governor's proposal, local law enforcement agencies would be reimbursed about $10 for every sample taken.
His budget also includes an extra $3 million to expand GPS tracking for certain people with domestic violence related restraining orders.
