Appleton violent crimes down 7 percent
Year-end crime statistics from 2012 show the number of calls for service at the Appleton police department was up, compared to 2011, but violent crimes were down.
The report shows the department received more than 52,300 calls, which is a four percent increase. Deputy police chief Todd Olm says the number of violent crimes dropped seven percent, from 222 in 2011, to 206 last year.
Olm says traffic crimes, like speeding, drunk driving, and seatbelt violations all rose significantly. He says grant money for traffic enforcement played a role in that, but officers can also print tickets from a computer in their car now, and that makes them more efficient.
The report showed that Appleton police took more than 2,300 people to jail last year, which is a five percent increase.
