Obama address sparks minimum wage debate
President Obama suggested raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9-an-hour during last night's State of the Union address, and critics say it could lead to significant layoffs.
UW-Oshkosh economics professor Ben Artz says a proposed hike in the minimum wage always sparks debate, but he says minimum wage increases haven't typically led to a spike in the unemployment rate.
Artz says a higher minimum wage could help more people get off of food stamps and other forms of public assistance. Opponents to the wage hike argue that more people will need public assistance because companies will create fewer jobs.
