Group: Vouchers would hurt special ed
Special needs students could be among the hardest hit by an expansion of the school voucher program. That's the fear of a Neenah mother, whose 18-year-old son with cerebral palsy went through the Neenah school system.
Katie Schierl says special education programs cost a lot of money, and when budgets get tight, special needs resources are often on the chopping block. She says public schools have to offer a certain level of special education, but even a small cut can have a big impact on several schools, because many share aides and psychologists.
Schierl says she's not opposed to private schools -- three of her children attended them -- but she doesn't think public money should support them.
Schierl is a member of Disability Rights Wisconsin, and the group was at the Capitol this afternoon to speak out about the proposed expansion.
