Cost to eliminate same-day registration climbs

The cost of eliminating same-day voter registration at the polls in Wisconsin is climbing.

The Government Accountability Board released an updated report today, factoring in the impact on state agencies.

Executive director Kevin Kennedy says the price tag would be between $13 million and $14.5 million, over the first two years. He says that's because the state would have to follow federal rules.

He says a number of agencies would have to give people the chance to register, when they're receiving state services, including the departments of transportation, children and families, and workforce development.

The initial report showed the change would cost the GAB more than $5 million, on its own, but Kennedy says after taking a closer look, they were able to reduce that to just under $4 million.

Governor Walker initially floated the idea of dropping same-day registration, but he said he wouldn't support it, if it would be too costly.
