Voters to decide ban on fund raids
A proposed amendment to the state constitution will be on the ballot in November of next year.
It would ban lawmakers from raiding the state's transportation fund to cover other state spending.
The Senate passed the proposal yesterday, 25-8, sending it to a statewide referendum. Opponents say there are times when the state needs to take money from the fund.
Republican Sen. Jerry Petrowski of Marathon says most people want to make sure road money doesn't go elsewhere.
Republican Rep. Dean Kaufert of Neenah co-sponsored the amendment. He says former Governor Doyle raided the fund, and that may have impacted the reconstruction of the Highway 41 interchange with Highways 10-441.
The Assembly approved the amendment last week. Both houses of the Legislature also passed it during the last session.
