Hanna reacts to residency proposal

Appleton's mayor says a proposal to lift residency requirements for local government workers across the state is the latest example of state lawmakers thinking they know what's best for communities.

Governor Walker included the issue in his state budget.

Mayor Tim Hanna says right now, Appleton department heads have to live in the city. He says he would be OK with relaxing that rule a little bit, but the city council strongly supports the requirement.

Hanna says if it's eliminated across the state, it could have an impact on public safety. He says in some areas, it won't be good if police and firefighters live 50 miles away, and there's an emergency.

During a visit in Appleton yesterday, Governor Walker said he initially only considered making the change in Milwaukee.
