Local YMCA turns 125 years old

The YMCA of the Fox Cities is celebrating its 125th birthday tomorrow.

Spokeswoman Sue Pawlowski says tomorrow is the actual anniversary date of the organization's founding, in 1888. Frank Harwood and other community leaders created the local chapter.

The original building was destroyed by fire several years later, and Pawlowski says the current facility on Lawrence Street in Appleton opened almost 50 years ago.

Pawlowski says they now have 40,000 members at their five facilities.

The YMCA is holding a kick-off celebration tomorrow night, at the UW-Fox Valley Communication Arts Center, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m
