Long spearing season good for bars
Bars along the shore of Lake Winnebago had better luck than many of the sturgeon spearers this year.
Scott Engel owns Jerry's Bar in Oshkosh. He says a 16-day sturgeon season is always better for business than when spearers have good luck, and they reach the harvest caps.
Engel says crowds on opening weekend quadruple his regular business, and he sees double the normal business for every day the season is open after that.
Spearers registered 567 fish this year, and that's one more than last year. Poor water clarity extended the season on Lake Winnebago.
The season closed after four days on the up-river lakes, where good ice and water clarity helped spearers hit the harvest caps.
