Budget panel approves mining bill
A bill that could open the door for an iron-ore mine
in northern Wisconsin is heading to the Senate.
The Legislature's budget committee approved a Republican proposal to streamline the permitting process for mines, on a 12-4 party-line vote yesterday afternoon.
Democrats argue that the bill relaxes environmental standards too much, and puts a mining company's desires ahead of the state's needs. Democratic Rep. Cory Mason of Racine predicts the bill won't take effect for years, because of potential lawsuits, even if Governor Walker eventually signs it.
Republican Sen. Alberta Darling of River Hills is the co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee. She argues that the proposal doesn't change air or water quality standards, and it would create jobs.
The Senate is expected to vote on it tomorrow. The Assembly will likely debate it early next week.
