Senator would create school sales tax holiday

Back-to-school shoppers could get a tax break, under a plan from an area lawmaker.

Senator Rick Gudex is sponsoring a bill that would create a sales tax holiday for school supplies, during one weekend in August. He says it would help low-income families afford things that their children need in the classroom.

Gudex says 18 other states offer a similar sales tax holiday, and many of them see an increase in sales tax collections during that time, because people by other items while they're at the store.

He says the Legislative Fiscal Bureau thinks the state will lose money from the proposal. He says the bill allows the department of revenue to end the tax holiday in future years, if the loss is too big.

Gudex is also calling for a sales tax holiday for Energy Star products, in early November.
