Senate debating mining bill
A controversial mining bill is generating some lively debate in the Senate this afternoon.
The Republican-backed proposal would streamline the state's permitting process, to help a company open an iron-ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties.
Republican Sen. Tom Tiffany of Hazelhurst is the main sponsor. He says lawmakers worked hard to address concerns about potential air and water quality problems. Democrats argue the bill would put those resources at risk. Tiffany says the bill doesn't change current pollution standards.
The Senate will likely vote on the bill today. If it passes, the Assembly would debate it next week.
