Budget would impact Appleton charter schools

One of the proposals in Governor Walker's budget would have an effect on charter schools across the state.

The Appleton school district has 15 of them, and superintendent Lee Allinger says they're concerned about losing control over them.

The governor wants to give charters total control over their budget, and curriculum. His proposal would also ban districts from imposing district rules on charter school staffers, even if they're district employees.

Allinger says the district has spent a lot of time over the years, developing successful charters.

Allinger says the governor also wants to create a state charter board that would have the authority to approve new charters, anywhere in the state. He says that would allow out-of-state, for-profit, charter schools to come into the state, and use public tax dollars, without the local community having a say.

He believes the proposals are policy items, that don't belong in the budget. He says they should be introduced as stand-alone bills.
