Mining bill clears Senate by 1 vote
A proposal to streamline the state's permitting process for mines took a big step forward last night.
After a similar bill stalled in the Senate nearly a year ago, members endorsed the latest version, on a 17-6 vote.
Sen. Tom Hazelhurst is calling it a first step in the rebirth of the state's mining industry. The Hazelhurst Republican downplayed the environmental concerns of opponents.
A company is pushing for the bill, in hopes of opening an iron ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties.
Democratic Sen. Bob Jauch of Poplar wanted to tax mining companies for taking iron ore from the ground. He says that revenue would be important, in covering any potential damage from a mine.
The proposal moves on to the Assembly for a vote next week.
