Prof: Pope's resignation sets precedent

For the first time in nearly 600 years, a pope resigned today, and a local professor says it probably won't be nearly that long before it happens again.

St. Norbert College religious studies professor Tom Bolin says Pope Benedict set a precedent, and he thinks future popes will also consider resigning as they age, when the weight of the papacy becomes more of a burden.

Bolin says the next pontiff will have to get serious about improving the church's image, following the church sex abuse scandal. He says that means going after church officials who covered for abusive priests.

Bolin says the next pope will likely use social media to connect with followers.  He also thinks the next pope will be considerably younger than some recent pontiffs.
