DWD secretary supports budget proposals

The leader of the state's workforce development department is touting proposals in Governor Walker's budget.

Secretary Reggie Newson says the governor is trying to make the most efficient use of state tax dollars, by forcing some recipients of food stamps, and other benefits, to take job training classes. The governor's budget also requires people to apply for at least four jobs each week, if they're collecting unemployment. That's double the current rule.

Newson says the budget would also help fill the state's skills gap, by targeting children when they're in middle school.

Newson says millions of dollars in grants for technical colleges and universities will also help train people for jobs in high-demand industries.
