New North focusing on closing skills gap
The goal of a bill that's headed to Governor Walker's desk is
to address the skills gap in the state's workforce, and the head of an economic development group says it's just one of the ways to deal with the issue.
New North executive director Jerry Murphy says the technical colleges in northeast Wisconsin are adapting their course offerings to address immediate needs.
He says schools are starting to talk with students, as early as sixth grade, about careers in the skilled trades. Murphy says that's important, because they need a continuous pipeline of candidates, especially as baby boomers start to retire.
The Senate unanimously approved a bill yesterday, and it would provide $15 million in job training grants. The state would also create a database to link the unemployed, and underemployed, to open positions. Governor Walker is expected to sign it soon.
