Appleton pay plan report shot down

The Appleton city council is throwing out the recommendations from a consultant for a new pay scale for city employees.

Members have talked about the issue for several months, and they turned down the report, on a 9-to-7 vote last night. The city paid Carlson Dettman Consulting $60,000 to do the work.

The human resources committee will take up the pay scale again, later this month.

Ald. Jim Clemons says among other things, the panel needs to create an appeals process, in case there's a disagreement.

Clemons says the consultants compared the salaries of public and private-sector workers, but they didn't take into account any differences in the benefits that those employees receive. He says that's a big part of the picture.
