Assembly mining debate under way
A bill to streamline the state's permitting process for mines is expected to clear its final hurdle sometime today, and then
head to Governor Walker's desk.
The Assembly started debating the proposal this morning, and a vote isn't expected until late this afternoon or sometime this evening.
Democrats warn that the proposal relaxes environmental regulations and that will lead to air and water pollution. Republican Assistant Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek insists that environmental protections remain in place. He says any new mine would also have to abide by federal pollution rules.
The bill is designed to help a company open an iron ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties. Steineke says it would likely take a couple of years to get it off the ground, but the mine could create hundreds of jobs.
