US Open is coming....eventually!

Tuesday, Jun, 18 2013

Fresh off the U.S. Open finishing Sunday at Merion in Pennsylvania, the USGA hosted members of the media Monday at Erin Hills, south of Hartford.  For the first time in our history,  Wisconsin will host the United States Open Chamionship in 2017. This is a big deal!

First of all, the course is amazing. Built in 2006 and tweaked along the way, Erin Hill is absolutely worthy of hosting the Open.  The Championship tees will stretch to nearly 7,800 yards for the Open.  Sure, it's long, but also very undulating, dangerous and features firm, fast greens. A slightly misplaced shot can spin off the surface and into deep bunkers or wispy tall grass up to your knees! I know, I was in more than a few of them yesterday!

Two holes to watch for: the 3rd hole is a par four monster that will play 500 yards to an elevated green that is extremely sloped and treacherous. And then the par five 7th, which will likely stretch to 620 yards for the Open!  If it's into the wind, it could feel like a 700 yard hole! Yikes!!

Sure, it's early, but the USGA is getting the word out now that the U.S. Open is coming to Wisconsin. Along with another PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup coming to Whistling Straits, there's a lot to be proud of in the State's golfing community.

Don't lose faith

Wednesday, Jun, 12 2013

I spent most of my Monday with some very good people. I played in a golf fundraiser for the Life Promotions group, the crew that brings us Lifest every year.  That's the Christian music and fellowship event coming this July to Sunnyview in Oshkosh.

These fine folks do their best to talk to kids, give them hope, work with them to hold onto their faith and strenghthen their relationships with their family, friends and others. I helped emcee the banquet following the golf, and we had a fanatastic day!  Big thanks to Dave Romenesko and his whole crew!

D-Day/Flag Day Parade Saturday

Thursday, Jun, 6 2013

Don't  forget a special remembrance today for those who served on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.  I mentioned on the show today about my Great Uncle Nick, who flew a bomber in WWII.  He is a great guy, one of the sweetest men you'll ever run into.  Sadly, he is losing his battle with Alzheimer's, and is a shell of his former self.  Estimates are that we lose 600 WWII Vets every day.  Appreciate them now...while we still can.

The rains will be done and the red, white and blue will be flying Saturday in Appleton. It's the 63rd Annual Appleton Flag Day Parade, with a tribute to the U.S. Army.  WHBY will start the action at 1:30, along with Pierce Manufacturing, handing out thousands of American flags, then the parade follows us at 2.  Should be mostly sunny and 72!
