Get your own racecar!

Wednesday, Jul, 17 2013

Your chance to own a racecar is now and even better, you can race against us.  This years Race for a Reason is happening on September 14th and the proceeds are all going to Catalpa Health, a Fox Valley mental health clinic for children and teens.  I could tell you all about how fun it is to participate, but this video is much more entertaining.

There are just a few spots left for race teams, so get your company on board today.  For more information check out the Race for a Reason web page.  Please join us in making a difference for children right here in northeast Wisconsin.

Red Smith night at the stadium

Thursday, Jul, 11 2013

Kudos to all that attended and enjoyed Red Smith night at theT-Rats game last evening!  We handed out the scholarship checks to our special award winners, plus numerous checks to area youth sports organizations that keep the kids busy all year!

It won't be long before next year's Red Smith Sports Awards banquet comes around, January 21st at the Paper Valley Hotel.  We already have a major speaker booked, and should have a great show for the over 1,300 sports fans that attend every year!  WHBY is a big supporter of the Red Smith banquet, and I am proud to be a member of the committee.

Weekend re-cap

Monday, Jul, 8 2013

Quick notes from the weekend:  first of all--it felt like summer, didn't it?  Warm, humid, bugs starting coming out like crazy---summer!!

Good job Andy Murray!  That can't be easy carrying the country on your back, with no British Wimbledon champ for 77 years.  Forgot that he was also a student at Dunblane, the site of that school shooting massacre back in the 90's.  Andy survived that day, but I believe 17 students and teachers did not.

The crash of flight 124 at San Francisco was sad with two people dying, but amazing in that so many people lived through it.  All the best to those still recovering from the crash.

2.04 inches of rain on Monday morning in the trusty rain guage at WHBY--maybe round two on Tuesday--stay tuned and we'll keep Storm Team 5 ready with updates.

US Open is coming....eventually!

Tuesday, Jun, 18 2013

Fresh off the U.S. Open finishing Sunday at Merion in Pennsylvania, the USGA hosted members of the media Monday at Erin Hills, south of Hartford.  For the first time in our history,  Wisconsin will host the United States Open Chamionship in 2017. This is a big deal!

First of all, the course is amazing. Built in 2006 and tweaked along the way, Erin Hill is absolutely worthy of hosting the Open.  The Championship tees will stretch to nearly 7,800 yards for the Open.  Sure, it's long, but also very undulating, dangerous and features firm, fast greens. A slightly misplaced shot can spin off the surface and into deep bunkers or wispy tall grass up to your knees! I know, I was in more than a few of them yesterday!

Two holes to watch for: the 3rd hole is a par four monster that will play 500 yards to an elevated green that is extremely sloped and treacherous. And then the par five 7th, which will likely stretch to 620 yards for the Open!  If it's into the wind, it could feel like a 700 yard hole! Yikes!!

Sure, it's early, but the USGA is getting the word out now that the U.S. Open is coming to Wisconsin. Along with another PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup coming to Whistling Straits, there's a lot to be proud of in the State's golfing community.

Don't lose faith

Wednesday, Jun, 12 2013

I spent most of my Monday with some very good people. I played in a golf fundraiser for the Life Promotions group, the crew that brings us Lifest every year.  That's the Christian music and fellowship event coming this July to Sunnyview in Oshkosh.

These fine folks do their best to talk to kids, give them hope, work with them to hold onto their faith and strenghthen their relationships with their family, friends and others. I helped emcee the banquet following the golf, and we had a fanatastic day!  Big thanks to Dave Romenesko and his whole crew!
