National Bike Challenge

nationalbikechallenge.org
...go there and sign up to be a part of a summer-long challenge to better fitness for yourself and perhaps a #1 ranking for Appleton in the process.

After doing an interview about this with the head of the Fox Cities Cycling Association this week on the PhilCast I myself have signed up and downloaded the free app on my phone to use while I ride. In a little eight-mile test ride yesterday I found the app to be pretty amazing. It gives you all the stats you need from your ride and automatically posts that info to the web site that tracks all this, totaling your miles and awarding you points.

Using this system in last year's challenge Appleton came in second place for total miles out of the 650 metro areas throughout the country participating. Rock solid, but it's time to bump us up to #1!

The season runs May through September, but you can sign up now and take part in the 'warm-up' phase of the program.

I'll be using the app to update my page throughout the riding season.

And as per usual I also keep a riding blog during the season, which is more about the written word of my experiences while riding than it is about stats.

But most of all, do yourself a favor and ride this summer....and maybe along the way, working together, we can get Appleton up there to #1.

Chef Robert Irvine of "Restaurant Impossible" on the PhilCast

Thursday, Mar, 14 2013

Wednesday nights you can bet I'm either in front of my TV watching or at the very least recording one of my favorite shows on television these days, "Restaurant Impossible" on the Food Network.

Host and star of the show Chef Robert Irvine joins me on the PhilCast Thursday afternoon right after the 3:30 news.

I love this show because in the vast wasteland of reality TV that exists today, this is 'real' reality TV. The big guy comes into a failing restaurant, talks tough and straightens out both the owners and the place itself.

Their track record is impressive. Failing restaurants turn successful. And to me, more importantly, the failing families who are running these places end up getting fixed as well.

It's always fun to interview people you admire and are a fan of. Such is the case for me today. Don't miss the interview.

And for more info on Robert Irvine and the show just CLICK HERE.

Time once again for "PhilCast Bracket Madness" and you can sign up to play along as of today. When it's all over, who will be the last PhilCast family member standing to win the coveted champion's sweatshirt, a one-of-a-kind hand made by SuperFan Judy? Will it be you? We'll stuff a PhilCast iPod holder with some coupons from the prize closet for you too. But mostly, lets be honest, it's about bragging rights. And for Reggie the Executive Producer it's about beating me at least.

All you have to do is sign up to play. CLICK HERE to get that done.
Fill out the information they need to set up your account and then to make sure you are in our group, here are some instructions for you to follow after you sign up.

--Click 'Join a public group'
--Search for 'PhilCast'
--Once at "PhilCast' click 'Join Group'

It's that simple. Take a look around and see who else is in the group and follow all of our progress there. The teams will be announced and posted as of Sunday night and then you can start filling out your brackets.

GOOD LUCK! (except for YOU Reggie)

How to ruin a little boy's birthday

Tuesday, Mar, 12 2013

All this 9-year-old third grader in Michigan did was bring the cupcakes his mom made  for him to school on his birthday.

The principal of the school ended up calling the kid's dad about it.

Seems the boy was in trouble for bringing in the cupcakes because they had little plastic toy Army men on them.

The Army men needed to come off those cupcakes immediately because the principal felt it was insensitive.

Really?

A) I think every little boy in America has at one time or another played with little green Army men and understood the difference between crazy people that shoot others in schools and members of our military.

B) That principal might not have the freedom to kick cupcakes out of the classroom were it not for the very real version of what stands atop those cupcakes.

Way to ruin the kid's birthday at school...and a big DUH to you Ms. Principal!

We'll discuss as part of the "Tell-a-Friend" Tuesday PhilCast today.

More than a 'beauty pageant'

Monday, Mar, 11 2013

It's a step toward the Miss America pageant, a little slice of life that plays out this time of year all around the country.

And it's more than a beauty pageant. It's a chance for young girls and women to grow by competing.

It was fun being one of the judges at the Miss Fond du Lac pageant Saturday, an all-day affair as the contestants one by one went through the process of being interviewed by us.

After the actual show, this is back stage with the winners: left to right...
Miss Fond du Lac Marissa Wier
Miss Oustanding Teen Marlaina Perelshtein
Miss Central Wisconsin Michelle Neumann

Congrats to all who took part!
