Jesus finds a new gnome?

Thursday, May, 22 2014

One of today's stories on the PhilCast really needs this visual...
A gnome given as a gag gift falls and cracks open. There inside is another statue of some type that appears to have been altered. It looks, they say, like the head of Jesus on a woman's body.

See for yourself.

This is what was inside when it fell and broke open.

And below is a close up of what was inside.

Jesus' head on the body of a woman?

Bucks' pick; Mallory Edens

Wednesday, May, 21 2014

Take a deep breath people.
Or, should I say 'guys'?

There she is, Mallory unknown until last night when the daughter of one of the co-owners of the Bucks was made the team's official rep at the draft lottery.

Sure the team got the #2 selection, but the bigger news seems to have been the coming out of Mallory here...who went from a couple hundred followers on Twitter to God knows how many as I type this.

At one point she gained 10,000 Twitter followers in an hour last night.

I'm guessing many of them are men....some of which were proposing marriage and others proposing things a lot worse. Ah, the good old interwebs.

She's only 18 boys...take a deep breath and behave yourselves.
But it just goes to show you how far a cute smile will take you in this world.

As for my reaction?
She kinda looks like Marsha Brady to me.

Historic hotel coming down

Tuesday, May, 20 2014

And that was after the original one burned down.

A piece of history will come down in Menasha, as the decision has been made to get rid of this grand old building in favor of something new, modern, and hopefully money-making for Menasha.

Cash is all well and good, but I'm a fan of old buildings oozing with character. I know they aren't efficient or cheap to renovate and keep functioning. Hell, we bought a house like that! I live it.

It saddens me to see a grand old building go away forever, but it is worse when it gives way for something that doesn't respect the spot. It's still unclear as to what exactly will take the place of this grand old lady.

I'll talk about this today on the show at 4:30-ish with the president of the Menasha Historical Society.

Vacation has ended

Sunday, May, 18 2014

Well that went fast.

And now it's back to PhilCasting, a.k.a. work, because I'm broke after a week on Sanibel Island. You know things have gotten pricey when you're paying $16.95 for a crunchy grouper sandwich. Oh, it comes with a pickle spear and a few chips. Yikes.

But the weather was incredible, warmer than usual last week. We hit 90-92 degrees every day, and the night-time low temp was always right around 80.

Speaking of weather, Reggie informed me that we had another bout of heavy rain last week and that some listeners were calling asking about my basement, which is prone to flooding in those situations! Thanks for asking. We got home late Saturday to find one lone puddle in the middle of the floor, meaning it must have come up through the floor again. No damage done.

Now, back to the vacation report....

I walked the beach every day for hours, collecting sea shells, seeing turtle nests, watching dolphins and just relaxing in general. I'm proud to say I really did disconnect from the internet, news and not a tweet was to be had on Twitter, not even a look.

A highlight of the trip was looking at a special house there. I'll have the  story on the Monday show. Plus, what one rather odd moment stuck out in my head from the entire trip. It involved being at a place in the Sanibel Harbor called Gramma Dots and a family there.

Now back to the oddity of socks. Wearing socks. Socks just feel very wrong to me right now. Wrong but necessary here, that's for sure.

Visiting Mike

Friday, May, 9 2014

I admit, I feel a bit uncomfortable writing about a writer.

Having for some time now fashioned myself as a bit of a word butcher, I get the sense that I'm kidding myself when I think I could do what, oh I don't know, an actual writer on the NY Times Best-Seller list does!

But here it is, my feeble attempt at writing about a writer named Michael Perry.

Words like "down home" style would probably be used to describe his books, although my guess is Mike himself wouldn't go for that whole stereotype thing.

This is his latest effort.

I'm not a reader, but I enjoyed every word of "Visiting Tom".
Maybe that's because I could have written it about my late neighbor at the lake house and just called the book "Visiting Eddie" instead.

To this day I can still hear Eddie's voice explaining to me how to use what he called a 'convincer', a large pipe placed over a wrench to add force when attempting to loosen a rusty nut.

There are a lot of Toms and Eddies out there, and for that I am grateful.

Ironically, for a guy who writes so much about everyday family life, I suspect Michael Perry gets no where near the amount of time he would like with his family here in Wisconsin.

These days he is either on a book tour, doing live radio show appearances or playing with his band called the Longbeds.

His traveling road show stops in Appleton on Friday, May 16 at the PAC. CLICK HERE for more info.

If he can squeeze me in, Michael will be on the PhilCast (his second time now, earning him the title of 'Friend of the PhilCast') at 3:45-ish today, Friday, May 9.

If you miss it, catch the podcast of the segment at

Now I better use spell check....he's an author for cryin' eye ay.
