Modern-day reporting

How did you first hear about the Temple shooting on Sunday?

Once again the first I heard of it was on Twitter, which is becoming my source for breaking news more often than ever.

But this time my access to media was limited because I was out at our lake home where there is no cable TV and even internet access can be sketchy at times, meaning the smart phone isn't a lock either.

You don't spend a few decades as a radio journalist and not have some of that instinct in your blood. When I first saw the tweets about the incident I felt like I should have been grabbing a recorder and driving to the scene to start phoning in radio reports.

So what did I do instead?
For a few hours I sat and tweeted my reports from various spots I could find information. It just felt like the right thing to do.

Twitter creates this feeling of community with those who are doing the same thing as you at the time. It was almost like a team Twitter effort to help get out the information.

This can also have negative effects. Bad info can spread like wildfire. People were being asked and reminded not to tweet anything from the scene that might compromise the efforts of authorities.
And then there's what I learned about Twitter on Sunday while this terrible tragedy unfolded.

There are people out there that are so twisted that they'll use an event like this to try to make a buck. Like I said, sick.
I'll talk all about it on the show today...as part of "Howz Yer Weekend?" because like it or not, this shooting was a part of our weekend...a very sad part.

State Fair Opening Day

Thursday, Aug, 2 2012

I'm sharing a few photos from last year's opening day at the Wisconsin State Fair when, for the second year in a row the PhilCast show was live from the grounds. I've got to admit that it seems very strange to me to not be there broadcasting for the first time in 16 years.

Although the PhilCast won't be there today, I will be playing a special open to the show that uses some clips from last year there.

And each day on the show Mr. Fair, Bill (of Fair) Bill Cicerelli will be phoning in a live report from the grounds right after the 3:30 news. Watch my blog for any corresponding photos that he sends me too.

Speaking of photos...
Here are a few from our PhilCast setup last year on opening day...

That's the State Fair's Kathleen O'Leary, whom you heard on the show on Tuesday doing a State Fair preview interview.

And of course that's Lips LaBelle co-hosting with me there.

We had a sweet set-up at Rupena's with our own house band and everything.

The Kids From Wisconsin dropped by to sing and be interviewed on the show as well.

Of course, cream puffs.

Me--Kris Kraft--Rich Ratay of Pack Yak fame!

Swim & Gym

Wednesday, Aug, 1 2012

Sure, Tuesday night was a great night for the U.S.A. at the Olympics. The U.S. 'pixies' take the gold in the gym and Michael Phelps becomes the most decorated athlete in history. Last night we belonged in the swim and gym.

But all the prime-time coverage continues to be on those two sports.

I've been over this before but it bugs me. The bottom line here is that if you want to see a variety of sports and you actually have a job or school or basically a life during the day you can't watch. NBC is basically saying you can see whatever you want on TV or on line, but don't expect to see it in prime time, which, I contend, is still the time most people watch TV. That's why it's called PRIME time.

Others tell me to just record the other sports.
Not so easy.
Then what?
When do I watch that? If I play back the recording in prime time I missed the big-ticket items of the day (like last night) that NBC had blacked out live.

There are only so many hours in a busy day.

I wish they gave me a variety in prime time.
....

Brewers play an afternoon game on HBY today....PhilCast with a delayed start should take off at about 4:30-ish.
