Celeb breakup

Wednesday, Oct, 24 2012

NY Jets QB Mark Sanchez and Eva Longoria are splitsville after a short romance that started earlier this fall.

Reports are that they are still friends, but their schedules were just too different.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I'd adjust my schedule!

At least the story gave me a reason to post a picture of her here at my blog.

That is all.

Worm Grunters

Tuesday, Oct, 23 2012

Turns out I'm not the only one with memories of using a primitive worm rod device to catch night crawlers.

Several PhilCast Family members contacted me after Monday's show about their parents or grandparents having something similar rigged up to use.

Also, our crack research department, a.k.a. listener Lori in Fond du Lac, sent me a link to a video story all about another method of catching fishing bait; Worm Grunters!

I'll play the piece today on the show.

The guy sounds hilarious. I do believe I've got the next goofy reality TV show all ready to go!

Reunited with my worm rod

Monday, Oct, 22 2012

As I bang out my daily blog this Monday morning there are parts of my body aching that I didn't even know I had. Details during "HowzYer Weekend" in the 4:00 hour of the show today, but suffice to say my weekend involved a lot of bending and lifting as it was 'take stuff out of the water' weekend at PhilCast West.

In addition to all the yard work and lifting on Saturday, the better part of Sunday was spent rebuilding the old shed out there, which brings me to the story of the day and the title of this post.

There she is:
"The Worm Rod"

As I pulled junk out of the shed Sunday that hadn't seen the light of day in years, there in a back corner was a piece of my childhood that brought memories of fishing with my grandpa out at the lake flooding back to me.

I thought the worm rod had been lost along the way. But no, it was just tucked inside the shed.

I do not believe this would have been approved for use by the general public.

It's a rod with a wooden handle and an old electrical cord taped to it.

No need to wait around for a rainfall and night time to search for night crawlers.
Want to go fishing and need some bait? Just plug in the worm rod, stick it into the ground, then stand back and wait for those crawlers to come dancing up out of their holes. It was as if we were snake charmers of a crawler kind.

As a kid it was like magic.

I can remember being warned a thousand times as my grandpa and I would wait, watch and pull out the crawlers tossing them into a can, "Don't get too close to the rod!"

Ya think?!

I even remember at times when you would pull a worm that was half out of its hole all the way out you could get a tingle yourself if it was too close to the worm rod. PETA would hate this thing.

Primative? I'd say so. Nothing fancy here, just a highly-illegal I am assuming piece of home-made genius for a kid who just wanted to go fishing in a hurry. I don't know if there were any other worm rods out there. Maybe this was a known thing to do in the 60's?

I threw some stuff away yesterday that had been pulled from the shed, but the worm rod stays. Not that I'd ever use it again (the old cord is now frayed showing exposed wires and making this dangerous implement even more dangerous) but there are just too many memories tied to it to throw it away.

Welcoming the "Leak Squad" to the PhilCast Family today

Friday, Oct, 19 2012

We welcome new advertiser "The Leak Squad" into the PhilCast Family this afternoon with a new feature segment we will be doing each Friday.

"The Leak Squad Drip of the Week" debuts just before the 4:30 news today.
(and yes, of course I have some special theme music created by Kris Kraft just for the occasion)

Each Friday I'll have a trio of drips to tell you about from goofy news stories of the week.
Then Reggie will pick the winner as our "Drip of the Week".

Make sure to check it out....should be fun.
And remember to please support those who support the PhilCast....that's how all this works!
Thanks.

Bill Cosby on the PhilCast today

Thursday, Oct, 18 2012

What do you ask a living legend?

Actually, I've already got a list of things to ask Bill Cosby when he joins us on the PhilCast at the start of today's show at about 3:10-ish.

Cosby brings his tales of life and living to the PAC next weekend on the 27th, part of a tour of concerts he is currently on.

75 years old and touring. My guess is he wouldn't have it any other way. It's certainly not about the $$ in his case!

In some ways I grew up a lot by watching The Cosby Show on TV back in the day. And I'll explain that to him and get his thoughts about it on the show this afternoon.

And I can't wait to hear what he has to say about what's on TV these days too. I've gotta ask about Honey Boo Boo!

Oh, tickets to his show on the 27th are still available, just check with the PAC.
